Our boy Ernest is a petite Basset with a large head and small body. He is making considerable progress gaining some weight as he came to NTBHR quite underweight.
It is amazing to see how quickly he has adapted to the household routine. He likes his food and is very happy anytime there is something to eat. Fortunately he is not aggressive with food, nor does he counter surf, probably because he is a short little Basset… However, he will protect his food from his foster brother and sister. We cannot blame him, considering his background. More than likely, this will go away with time, as he becomes more secure in his new environment. Ernie has learned to use the doggie door and so far he has had no accidents in the house. After dinner, he immediately goes out and does his business. He is a good boy!! Ernie loves to go for walks. He walks by your side without any pulling. In fact he is a rather slow walker. He is a Basset Hound who likes to sniff the air and enjoy his time outside. My grandson (4 years of age) has no trouble walking Ernie. He will, however, react to rabbits by pulling and barking. Little Ernie likes people, including children. We have yet to expose him to cats. He has made two trips to the dog park and shows more interest in people and being petted than the other dogs. He still has trust in people, which is pretty amazing considering his background, which is obvious neglect. I have had to explain that he is a foster dog so people didn't turn me in for Basset abuse as he is so skinny... He does not like the crate. The first night he tried to dig his way out through the kitchen floor. I gave up and let him sleep on the couch. He does go into the crate when we bribe him with treats during the day. He has quickly determined that he prefers our bed or a dog bed on the floor, compared to the crate. Quite frankly, as he knows the doggie door too, the crate is not really necessary for Ernie. Did we say Ernie loves to eat? He cannot get enough... He is such a sweet boy and quickly learned to sleep through the night. We haven't attempted to cut his nails and do that kind of grooming yet. As he is so laid back, we don’t think it would be a problem. Another thing he loves is to ride in car. He will attempt to jump in the back gate of the Explorer, and has no concept of being a Basset Hound with short legs. He clearly has a very positive attitude! He has yet to show any interest in toys, maybe that will come with time. Ernie is a very friendly and loving guy. He loves to be petted and will sit next to you for hours for some companionship either on the couch or outdoor lounge. At this point he has very limited experience with being left home alone. We put him in the crate when we went bowling one time. He didn't howl but was very happy to get out when we got home… Ernie has been a quiet little Basset, and has not made a sound except to growl at our Snoopy a couple times for the first few days, but that passed when he realized that they didn’t pose any threat. Now he meets me at the gate to the backyard with a whine and a couple of barks for attention. He will bark at rabbits and squirrels. Ernie is a very good natured little dog who just wants some love and food. Definitely a couch potato and low maintenance Basset. All he wants is a couple of square meals and someone to share the couch with, and who doesn’t want that? He will feel at home in a family with children and doesn't necessarily need another dog for company. He likes to be outdoors in the sun or laying on the lounge on the patio (knowing that he is free to go back in the house at any time!). Ernie doesn't have an aggressive bone is his little body. As he is starting to fill out, he looks healthier every day. If you are looking for a little boy to love and dote on, Ernie is your guy. The love and devotion he will offer in return will make it all worthwhile.
