Jenny is a petite little basset with a big personality. Her owners didn't claim her after 2 weeks in the shelter adoption program, and so she was scheduled for euthanasia today. Why? Because she has heartworms, and no adopter wanted to take on her medical problem. This is where rescues step in to save the dog, when it is otherwise not adoptable. Heartworms are epidemic in Texas, transmitted by mosquitoes through the bloodstream. The worms mature around the heart, choking the heart until the dog dies. Heartworm preventative is recommended year round in the state of Texas to prevent heartworms in your pet. http://www.heartwormsociety.org/ Because Jenny was not given the preventative, she will now have to undergo the costly and painful treatment that will last for about 30 days. Despite her disease, she's a happy little girl who never stops wagging her tail! She will make a wonderful family companion !
