Buddy is a 2 1/2 - 3 years old handsome Basset boy. He is both house and kennel trained. With a treat, he goes straight to his kennel. On rare occasions, he might still have an accident in the house, usually when he feels neglected. He has a doggie door today, and knows perfectly well how to use it. You can tell him to ?go potty? and that is what he will do.

Buddy is a super friendly guy, he loves everybody, including kids. He is a big lover, and likes to jump up and give lots of kisses. He shows mild interest in the cats that live with him, and is left unsupervised with the cats during the day, and does wonderfully. Also living with Buddy, is another Basset and a Chihuahua; he gets along fine with both, and likes to play and romp like any other young Basset. He is not an Alpha dog, and will back down if exposed to one, expect when he is guarding his rawhide. Then again, all dogs needs supervision when chewing on bones, so nothing unusual there.

Buddy has a special skill; he will bring you gifts, e.g. socks, glasses, teddy bears, whatever he can find. No destruction, just likes to bring them to you. If leather items are left out, he might chew on them. With substitute chew items, this should subside with time. If he finds a sneaker, he likes to play the game of ?toss in the air and catch?. Very cute to watch!

We are working on his leash skills, but he is an energetic boy and he really wants you to walk faster. He is currently using a special collar to prevent pulling, and that has helped. Unfortunately, there are so many good things to sniff out there, making walking next to foster mom so challenging?

Buddy has not had an easy life. When found, he had heartworms, fleas, ticks, a bad bleeding rash, as well as being severely underweight. Quite horrible! It appears he has been physically abused, as he will hunch down in submission, eyes closed, if something is waved in his face or if you unexpectedly drop down close to him. Despite this, he is a sweet and gentle dog, just begging to be accepted and loved. Buddy?s future forever home needs to use gentle training, as harsh commands will do him no good. He has had enough of that, and will respond with fear. Fortunately, he seems to understand well when he does something wrong, and will learn quickly what is expected from him. He is such a sweet, smart boy.

He is now close to 45 pounds, and is finally starting to look the way he should. Due to his front legs being slightly turned out, he is not a great ?jump up on the bed candidate?, just not quite able to make it. He is an ?A Typical? Basset and will make a mess when drinking? He is such a great dog in all other ways though, so he cares about a little water mess? That?s what towels are for!

We have learned that he does best with food in small bites. Big kibble is not for him. Per the vet, there is nothing wrong with his teeth, so not to worry. He prefers to eat in the evening, and just isn?t much for breakfast. When he first arrived, as the tattered dog he was, he didn?t eat for two days. He is doing fine now, and we are sticking to the small bite kibble as he does so well with that. He is a definite counter surfer, so food that is not for Buddy, needs to be kept away from the edges where it can be reached. A quick squirt of water from a spay bottle will deter counter surfing with time.

When Buddy is lonely and/or happy, he will bark. At first, he howled when foster mom went to work. As he adjusted and knew she would come back, he settled and is now quite content going for a nap when mom leaves. Like with all new dogs, an adjustment period is to be expected. He is a good announcement dog, and will signal if somebody walks by outside. Buddy will probably benefit from not living in an apartment, as a Basset bark can bother the neighbors. With proper attention, activity and the TLC he deserves, Buddy will be a wonderful companion. How can you blame somebody for telling you he is happy? They cannot laugh like we do, but they can bark!
Buddy answer?s to his name and responds promptly when spoken to. This little boy has come so far! He likes his treats, his walks, bringing gifts to foster mom and laying around. After all he has gone through; he is now a comfortable and happy boy. He would love as much company as possible, some kids at the right age, and/or another dog buddy would be wonderful. He has earned the best forever life he can get. His foster mom says he is one of the sweetest dogs she has ever met? and who could ask for more?
