THE RAINBOW BRIDGE

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.   There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.  There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.  All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.

Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.   The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.  His bright eyes are intent.  His eager body quivers.

Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.   You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.......

Nash #1773
Our sweet boy NASH went over the rainbow bridge on January 30, 2024. What a joy and a privilege it was for him to live in our house! He was our first adoptee. We were not looking for an older basset but when he walked in the door we told his foster that he was not leaving. We got to experience the pure joy of having him for almost three years. He was my husband's best friend and our house is so empty without him even though we have adopted two other basset hounds. OH to hear him bay one more time!!

Newman

Newman (FKA: Smokey):  We had lost our Fred (NTBHR rescue # 107) in 2008 due to cancer.  That same year we went to the NTBHR site to find another rescue to adopt… and there was Smokey.  My husband said immediately he was the one.  We went to the adoption event and where looking around.  We had gone down the lane, where they usually kept the carts, to see Basil; and as we were sitting on the floor here comes a basset and sits on my husband’s lap, then mine.  Turns out it was Smokey!  He came to us, so we knew it was fate.  He was home with us within a couple of weeks.  My husband named him Newman, which as it turns out fit him very well.  He was such a loving soul who brought joy to all around him.  He loved nature, so much so that we had thought he had eaten a cicada; however, he kept it in his mouth and brought it in the house and released it (his friend).  Boy  were we surprised!  There were also many occasions when we would go outside and he would be barking away, looking up.  The first couple of times we were trying to figure out what he was looking at and finally realized he was barking at the birds in the sky.  He wanted to catch them, and probably bring them in the house as friends also.  As he got older he had some of the normal basset issues heart murmur, spurs in back, etc, but his tail kept wagging.  The only time his tail was not wagging was when he was asleep; and sometimes even then.  Our sweet boy was loving until the end.  He suddenly got ill and we took him to the emergency vet.  After 5 days at the emergency vet (multiple blood transfusions, antibiotics etc) he was not getting any better.  We knew it was time to take him to our family veterinarian to get his assessment.  With a heavy heart we could not put Newman through any more, so on March 1st, 2016 we let him cross to the Rainbow Bridge where he can run and play with Fred, Cassie, Jake and Turco.   We love them all and miss them all.  We had 8 wonderful years with Newman and feel very blessed to have had those years.
